  • The first woman to hold a professorship at a university in the modern Western world was Laura Bassi. She was appointed as a professor of physics at the University of Bologna in 1732.

  • Socrates, the ancient Greek philosopher, is often considered one of the earliest informal educators. He didn't have a formal school but instead engaged in discussions with his students, encouraging them to think critically and question everything.

  • The University of al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco, founded in 859 AD, is recognized by UNESCO and the Guinness World Records as the oldest existing, continually operating higher educational institution in the world.

 

  • In 1728, Caleb Phillips placed an advertisement in the Boston Gazette offering to teach shorthand to students remotely. This is considered one of the earliest forms of distance learning.
  • "The Elements" by Euclid is one of the oldest known textbooks in the world. It dates back to around 300 BC and covers geometry, making it a foundational text in mathematics education. 
  • In the United States during the 19th century, one-room schoolhouses were common. These schools often had only one teacher who taught children of all ages and grade levels in the same room. 
  • Ancient Greeks valued a well-rounded education, known as "paideia," which encompassed intellectual, moral, and physical development, including subjects like physical education, music, and academic studies.
  • Marie Curie worked as a tutor to finance her own education and that of her sister before becoming the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two different sciences (Physics and Chemistry).

  • Ancient Sumerians, one of the earliest civilizations, established schools known as Edubbas, and they were primarily focused on teaching scribes to maintain administrative records.
  • Friedrich Froebel, a German educator, established the first kindergarten in 1837. He believed that young children learn best through play and hands-on activities, laying the groundwork for modern early childhood education.
