About

I was born an brought up in Malaysia, and when I was 15, moved to the UK to complete my schooling and university. As a half Malaysian, half British child it was important to my parents that I experienced both sides of my heritage.

I studied Ancient Greek Literature and Languages up to Master's level at Oxford University, before working in an underpaid job in the academic publishing industry in London, first as an Editorial Assistant, eventually finding my way up to Senior Editor. I liked my job, until the company restructured and my colleagues moved on. Suddenly I felt lost and unfulfilled.

Concurrently, I was also taking an interest in healthy food, finding my way to the Paleo diet and Crossfit. One Sunday, as I was going to bed, I thought 'urghh I can't face going into work tomorrow!' That was my wake up call – I never wanted to work in a job that I dreaded. I went down a rabbit hole that eventually found me signing up to do a 3-year nutrition diploma and a 1-year natural chef course.

Although I wasn't married yet and didn't have any children, I knew I wanted a flexible work-life that would work around family life. And so, two years into the course I finally plucked up the courage to leave my job and go freelance, initially as a copyeditor and then once I qualified, as a private and retreat chef, and finally as a nutritionist.

Subsequently I have trained as a mindful breastfeeding supporter and support new mums with breastfeeding antenatally and immediately postpartum. I have also trained as a sling peer supporter and volunteer at my local sling library.

Some fun facts about me:

  • I was born in Malaysia to a Malaysian father and British mother. I now live in the UK but I love Malaysian food and the weather, and often think about moving back there.
  • I have a boy and a girl who keep me on my toes.
  • I lost my mother before I turned 30, and motherless mothering has been one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.
  • I love cooking and eating good food, but I was a fussy eater as a child! Karma has returned to me as my son is very fussy too!
  • I spent 6 months backpacking around India after I finished my undergraduate degree, where I was randomly in a Bollywood film with Kylie Minogue.

Career

Within a year of qualifying as a nutritional therapist, I became pregnant with my first child. I immediately threw myself into researching how to eat optimally for pregnancy. However, I noticed two things:

  1. There was a lot of information about what I SHOULDN'T eat, but not very much about what I SHOULD eat.
  2. 2. A lot of the time, I just wanted to eat toast. This led me to specialise in pregnancy and postpartum recovery because I wanted to help people understand the important of good nutrition during pregnancy AND I wanted to be a kind and gentle guide who understands that sometimes optimal isn't always possible.

Over time I've gradually moved over to specialising in exhausted mothers, looking for ways to get more energy while being the best parent they can. I find my clients tend to be mothers of under 5s and second time mums, because that is when they are at their most tired. I use my Motherhood RESET Method to help them make step-by-step changes across five areas of their life to feel their best.

I love sharing the small changes I know mums can make to feel energised. My superpower is taking the information and interpreting it into small, bite-size action steps that feel doable. I live for this kind of testimonial: "You've given me the direction I needed; I was so overwhelmed by it all and you gave me the tools without making it more overwhelming."

I see 1:1 clients online on 4-month packages, as well as running low cost workshops, short mini courses and challenges to share my information. In addition, I run antenatal breastfeeding courses and see new mums for mindful breastfeeding support 1:1. I also offer valuable information on all my areas of specialty for free via my podcast Raising Healthy Mothers, on Instagram @tashadcruz and in my mailing list.
